FEBT Restoration – Speeder

During its common carrier days, the East Broad Top first used handcars for track maintenance gangs, and later switched to gas powered “speeder” cars. The EBT had a small fleet of these at one time.

In 2005 an original EBT speeder was returned to the EBT after a 40-year absence when it was purchased by the Friends of the East Broad Top and added to FEBT’s growing collection of EBT equipment. The speeder was constructed by the railroad in 1920 using a Fairmont engine. The railroad had sold the speeder to a collector in the early 1960s.

Over the following months, the engine was removed and rebuilt and other mechanicals were repaired and upgraded as needed. The speeder has made numerous appearances at special events, offering rides to FEBT members.
